JEE Mains 2014: Andhra Pradesh Retains Top Spot with 22,000 making it to JEE Advanced

Almost 22,000 candidates from Andhra Pradesh have qualified to appear for JEE (Advanced ), scheduled for May 25. The state thus retains the pole position even this year, a daily reports.

The JEE (Mains) topper is also an Andhra Pradesh student. Pramod Vakacharla from Sulurapeta in Nellore district scored 355 out of 360 to bag the top spot.

Uttar Pradesh with its largest population of class XII passouts is the immediate follower with 19,409 making it to the JEE Advanced. Rajasthan, home to the popular IIT coaching hub of Kota, finished at the third with 16,806 students qualifying this year. However, Bihar slipped to fifth position despite 1,210 more students qualifying than last year.

Maharashtra, however, fared remarkably well this year jumping few spots to hold fourth place on the list with an almost 47 per cent increase in successful candidates as compared to the last year.

The top five states - Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Bihar - contributed more than 80,000 of the 1.54 lakh students (53.3 per cent) who have qualified for the JEE (Advanced), the entrance test to get admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology.

Gujarat, a state just out of the top five, also showed significant improvement with a 35 per cent rise in the number of students qualifying for the advanced exam.

After Maharashtra, Kerala, among the top 10 states, saw the biggest jump of 46.1 per cent in candidates qualifying for the advanced exam. In absolute numbers, Andhra's 21,818 successful candidates (19.6 per cent rise) towers over Kerala's 6,602.

Delhi's performance remained steady with 7,629 students getting to take a shot at entering the IITs as against 7,478 in 2013.

Registration for JEE Advanced has already started. The cut-off mark for the JEE Main 2014, Paper 1 (for admission to undergraduate IIT courses like BE and BTech) is 115 in the Common Merit List (general) category, compared to 113 last year.

For non-IITs like the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), the final admission would be based on a final ranking list based on JEE-Main scores (60 per cent weightage) and Class 12 exam marks (40 per cent weightage), after the board exam marks are normalised to eliminate the variations in marks given by different boards.
